Hot Comeback: Neil Diamond The hottest singer in America right now isn't some young gangsta rapper, or a teen queen. It's a Brill Building-era singer/songwriter with a resume of ballads and bombast. Yes, it's time for the Neil Diamond comeback.
As often happens with such comebacks, this round of Diamond-mania was spearheaded by an episode of VH-1's Behind the Music. On July 22nd, they aired an episode about Diamond, and since then his searches have gone through the roof.
Yes, Neil Diamond is now getting five times as many searches as he received before the Behind the Music episode. In fact, Neil Diamond actually comes close to making the Lycos 50 this week, with as many searches as Destiny's Child. This despite the fact that he is much less "bootylicious" than Beyonce Knowles.
The fact is, the Diamond resurgence has been brewing for some time. "Sweet Caroline" has become a frat party and wedding reception staple, and February's film Saving Silverman featured the film's lead characters playing in a Neil Diamond tribute band. Lycos users have a set up a number of Neil Diamond tribute pages, which include this biography and this lyrics archive.
Diamond is riding this wave of nostalgia by putting out a new album, Three Chord Opera, which debuted at #15 on the Billboard album charts. He's also going on tour this summer and we got a number of searches for Neil Diamond concert and Neil Diamond tickets from fans who are looking for another one of Diamond's classic hot August nights on stage.
Lycos users know that for kitsch and glitz, there really is no comparison. Neil Diamond is the man.
(We'll still never forgive him for the Jazz Singer, though. What a shonda.)
TOMORROW: The next novelty hit. |
