Movers & Shakers: Top Harry Potter Searches
July 31, 2007

Barry Bonds, in search of the all-time home run record, gained 1,686% this week. On July 27, Bonds hit his 754th home run against the Florida Marlins. Meanwhile, he remains under investigation for perjury during his 2003 Grand Jury testimony relating to the BALCO steroids scandal when he testified that a substance given to him by his personal trainer was flaxseed oil and arthritis balm. Last week, it was announced that the Grand Jury investigating Bonds has been extended for six months.

D'oh! According to the LA Times, The Simpsons Movie blew apart industry expectations and grossed $71.9 million in its opening weekend in the U.S. and Canada. Search interest in The Simpsons increased 107% this week. The Simpsons debuted in 1989 and has been running strong (or maybe not as strong as it once did, depending on who you ask) for 18 seasons.

As Muggles across the world pored over the final Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, searches for Harry Potter gained 41%. Personally, I was in sort of a fugue state as I read this novel, unable to interact with humanity on any real level until I knew how everything turned out. I was seeing dementors out of the corner of my eye. (Maybe that was an effect of the four butterbeers I consumed at the Harry Potter release party.)

Here are a list of the top ten people, places, and things searched from the Harry Potter novels this week. Surprisingly, Harry's best friend Ron Weasley and archnemesis Voldemort did not even register as a blip of search activity.

1. Hermione
2. Wizard
3. Wand
4. Muggle
5. Snape
6. Draco Malfoy
7. Hogwarts
8. Lupin
9. Luna Lovegood
10. Quidditch

On the Move
