Who Gives You an Itchy Mouse Finger? The week after a typical Hollywood movie opens, Web searches for its stars tend to rise 400-500%. But of course, there are exceptions.
Below are six actors whose movement was extra high -- or extra low -- when we compared searches one week after their movie opened to searches four weeks earlier.
THE WINNERS
Hugh Jackman - searches up 8475%. A virtual unknown before his turn as Wolverine in The X-Men, Jackman is suddenly the search star of summer 2000. People are crazy about him.
Russell Crowe - up 1368%. Already an Oscar-nominated star, Crowe still got a mighty boost out of his chest-baring hero in The Gladiator. He was on the Lycos 50 for six weeks.
Thandie Newton - up 5763%. Tom Cruise's squeeze in Mission Impossible: 2 was catnip to Web users. Look for her salary to rise for MI:3.
THE LOSERS
Tom Cruise - up 96%. Maybe he should have though twice about sharing the screen with Ms. Newton -- or could his heartthrob days finally be past?
Sandra Bullock - up 112%. A mere doubling of traffic for the star of 28 Days is not a good sign, especially considering her Web pinup status in former years.
Jim Carrey - up 21%. Carrey barely got a rise out of Web users after Me, Myself and Irene. (Co-star Rene Zellweger was up 400%). Poor Carrey: dissed by Oscar and now dissed by the public.
