One to Watch: Puddle of Mudd Once upon a time, Elvis Presley caused a scandal by shaking his hips. Now a popular rock song can feature a chorus that makes the musical statement, "I love the way you slap my ass."
The song is "Control," and the band is Puddle of Mudd, who have been making a move on the Lycos search charts for the last couple weeks. With the video for "Control" debuting July 31 on MTV and their album Come Clean set for August 28, a move on the Billboard charts is sure to follow.
Puddle of Mudd is the latest band to ride the coattails (or should that be baseball cap brim) of Limp Bizkit lead singer Fred Durst. Durst discovered Puddle of Mudd in 1999 when Puddle frontman Wes Scantlin snuck backstage after a Limp Bizkit performance in Puddle's hometown of Kansas City. He used a fake backstage pass and passed a demo tape to Durst's security guard, which subsequently got passed on to Durst.
Thousands of bands each year try to sneak backstage to pass demo tapes off to famous musicians, and very, very few actually catch a break because of it. But Puddle of Mudd got lucky, and now their popularity is on the rise.
Puddle actually doesn't sound that much like Limp Bizkit -- the band is more of a grungy hard rock band than a rap hybrid. They could probably be best compared to Staind, another band that got its start thanks to help from Durst, or to Godsmack, with whom they are touring this summer.
Puddle of Mudd, by the way, is in no way related to former NBC news anchor Roger Mudd. Nearly half the searches spell their name with just one "d."
We don't think that Puddle of Mudd is destined to debut at number one on the album charts, like Alicia Keys. We don't think they are destined to cross over to the pop charts, like Crazy Town. But we do think they are poised to become the next big rock thing. Keep a look out.
