Hot Topic: Fibromyalgia Fibromyalgia is the hot ailment of the year 2000, if user searches are any indication.
Queries for the ailment have been rising steadily for months, and last week it was the sixth most-searched-for illness after cancer, diabetes, AIDS, herpes, and lupus. That's serious company.
According to our chums at WebMD, "Fibromyalgia is a syndrome distinguished by chronic pain in the muscles, ligaments, tendons, or bursae around joints." It involves a mysteriously extreme soreness or exhaustion, and in fact is sometimes mistaken for Lyme Disease or chronic fatigue syndrome.
As with chronic fatigue syndrome, some people are skeptical the syndrome even exists -- a sore point (so to speak) with fibromyalgia sufferers. About 3% of all fibromyalgia queries are for herbs for fibromyalgia -- a sign that many people are taking the alternative medicine route.
It also seems a difficult syndrome to spell. About 20% of last week's queries were misspelled, including such variations as fibromyalagia, fibromyalgie, fibromylagia and fibromyalsia.
