Every teen movie has a breakout star. She's the hot face (and body) who takes a supporting role, does an appearance in Maxim, shows up on Howard Stern. She gets a huge boost in Internet interest and then goes on to some starring roles. Think of Shannon Elizabeth in American Pie, or Denise Richards in Threesome.
But what happens if that breakout star doesn't do the Maxim appearance, doesn't show up on Howard Stern, doesn't have other star appearances set up for the future - but still gets a huge boost in Internet interest?
That's the situation facing actress Kathleen Robertson. She's the new face in Scary Movie 2, the main actress who didn't appear in the first film. Her searches have exploded in the last two weeks, and it may have caught Hollywood entirely off guard.
Robertson received virtually no searches until two weeks ago, and then last week she jumped up our list of the hottest women on the Web. This week she receives as many searches as the previously mentioned Elizabeth, a regularly searched Web hottie who got a career boost from the first Scary Movie but doesn't appear in the second. Robertson also receives more than twice as many searches her Scary Movie 2 co-star, Anna Faris.
From we can tell, all these searches come from people who saw Robertson in Scary Movie 2. She hasn't done a lot of press or appearances in any magazines that we know of in order to promote the film.
Before Scary Movie, Robertson is most known for playing Clare Arnold during the last few years of Beverly Hills 90210. Her biggest film roles to date were in the little-seen romantic comedy Dog Park and the even littler-seen Greg Araki picture Splendor. Not exactly the resume of the next big thing.
Looking at Robertson's movie plans for the future, it looks like this is a One to Watch that might take a while. Robertson doesn't have any star turns in her near future, except in the art film XX/XY (directed by Buffalo 66 mastermind Vincent Gallo). It may take some time for Hollywood to jump on the rising star that Robertson seems to have become thanks to this film. Nonetheless, all these searches show that a lot of interest is out there.
