Hot Hunk: Heath Ledger Here's a new hottie booming up our search charts: Heath Ledger. Heath Ledger searches have risen 1000% in the past month. The reason? Ledger plays Mel Gibson's hunky rebel son in The Patriot. Ledger is brown-eyed, curly-haired, and looks a bit like he ought to be playing tambourine for Hanson. And like Gibson, he's an Aussie. Mind you, just appearing in a big movie doesn't necessarily mean a major rise in user interest. Mel Gibson searches are up four-fold, a fine showing, but on the other hand Jim Carrey searches are actually down 20% since the opening of Me, Myself and Irene. (His co-star Rene Zellweger is up around 200%.) Our past experience is that when relative unknowns get a big search bump from a movie opening, stardom is in the offing. (What better sign that an actor is connecting with the public?) Last year Shannon Elizabeth got heavy searches after the release of American Pie, and a year later she's at #36 in the Lycos 50. Prediction: look for heavy Heath action in summer 2001.
