Early searches weren't quite as high as those for other summer blockbusters, but this week's arrival in theatres sees the rise of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (#11) up the Lycos search logs. And, as we predicted back at the end of 2002, actress Kristanna Loken (#44) is a big hit as the evil female cyborg that fights Ah-nold.
(If you're trying to decide if Terminator 3 is worth eight bucks, check out our Lycos Movies page with a lot of streaming video trailers and clips).
But even Loken can't beat Hollywood's hottest commodity right now: Demi Moore. The star of Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (#47) moves up to #15 on this week's list, and gets 50 percent more searches than the three younger Angels put together (Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, and Drew Barrymore).
LEGEND DIES: Demi Moore may be popular now, but in the annals of film history she can't touch the legend of Katharine Hepburn (#38). The renowned actress passed away last week and received a very high number of queries compared to other older actors who have passed in the last few years.
The more common Katherine, actually an incorrect spelling for Hepburn's name, was searched 50 percent more often than the proper Katharine. Other requested spellings included Kathryn, Kathrine, and Kate. We also got plenty of searches for Hepburn's frequent co-star Spencer Tracy, as well as the also-legendary but not-related Audrey Hepburn.
Another deceased celebrity getting a lot of queries is soul singer Barry White, but he doesn't make the Lycos 50 because his death came at the end of the week.
HANG UP: The Federal Do Not Call List is still the #1 topic on Lycos this week by a very large margin, with twice the searches of #2 KaZaA and 180 percent more searches than still absurdly popular #3 topic Clay Aiken. Now, if only we can get a Federal Do Not Spam list, we'll be really happy.
ANOTHER ANIME: It's one of the few popular Japanese animated shows we haven't written about, since it has risen up our search logs so slowly. But this week, Inuyasha (#41) makes its Lycos 50 debut. It's another fantasy-based anime, about a girl who teams with a half-demon (named Inuyasha) to track down the shards of a powerful jewel. What makes it a bit different from the other Japanese cartoons to make our list is that it aims at a more mature audience and airs during Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block of programming, not with the kid-oriented anime shows like Pokemon (#46) and Dragonball (#5).
SHORT SUBJECTS: While Eminem (#32) stays strong on our search logs, his protege 50 Cent (#34) is fading... It seems to have become the nation's hottest discussion topic overnight, but gay marriage isn't getting very many searches online... America's favorite form of vicarious athletics, fantasy football, is quickly approaching the Lycos 50 with the NFL (#42) season still two months away.
NEW THIS WEEK: Terminator 3 and star Kristanna Loken, Fourth of July, FAFSA, Katharine Hepburn, Inuyasha, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, Howard Stern.
DROPOUTS: Orange County Choppers, Weight Watchers, Barbie, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Oprah Winfrey, air conditioners, NBA Draft, the wedding of Adam Sandler and Jackie Titone.
TWO YEARS AGO: Remember Chandra Levy? She first appeared at #37 on the Lycos 50 back in July 2001.
TOMORROW: Vermont's online sensation.
