Hype Sizzles, Searches Fizzle
June 21, 2002

Usually on the Lycos 50, we discuss the things you're searching for. Today, however, we'll discuss the things you're not searching for. Here are some movies and musicians getting just a handful of searches despite a lot of press attention and advertising.

The industry hype behind rocker Andrew WK has been as intense as his heavily-layered bubblegum metal music. His album I Get Wet, featuring no less than three songs with the word "Party" in the title, was given the lead review in both Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly. He did a Saturday Night Live appearance and his songs are in a number of commercials. But none of that is making him very popular online. Andrew peaked in searches the week after he was on SNL and quickly dropped back to near-nothing status. Last week, he got as many queries as the Durham Bulls minor league baseball team or the country of Holand misspelled with only one "L."

Speaking of poor spelling, another musician who isn't making waves online is R&B singer Musiq, whose new album Juslisen came out May 7. The well-regarded R&B singer got a few queries the week after his album came out, but since then he has sunk to the depths of the search logs. This is despite that fact that his album debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts. Among the queries at the same level as Musiq this week: bra manufacturer Playtex and cheap cigarettes.

The situation with movies is a bit different. When movies don't get searches, it doesn't necessarily mean they won't be successful. In a summer of action blockbusters, two kinds of movies fall through the cracks.

The first is the drama. It is rare for an Oscar-contending drama to be released in the summer, which helps explain why searches for Road to Perdition are so small. Perdition is a dark, quiet movie starring Tom Hanks as a hitman in 1930's Chicago and Paul Newman as his father. Not the kind of movie that gets attention in the summertime -- and its not getting early search traffic either. But with that cast, you can bet it won't bomb in theatres when adult moviegoers are looking for a serious alternative.

Oddly enough, the other movies that don't get searched much are kids' movies. People think that the Internet is a kids' medium, but at least when it comes to movies that isn't so. Before we realized this, we did stupid things like predicting that Shrek would be a flop. Now we know better.

So we're not concerned that there aren't any searches yet for July 19's Stuart Little 2 or August 7's Spy Kids 2. If history is a guide, searches for these films will get heavier after they open, when kids want to know more about the characters they've just seen (and, of course, buy related toys).

* * * * *

Before the weekend hits, we want to take some time to look at recent mystery terms and the responses we've received.

Sailor Moon searches, it turns out, are up because the show recently returned to the Cartoon Network after more than a year off the air. Thanks to many Lycos 50 readers for responding.

The Audiogalaxy search jump, however, has still not been answered. We still aren't sure why the file-swapping program went up 24 slots last week. But we do know why Audiogalaxy will go even higher next week, perhaps into the top ten. On Monday, the company reached an agreement with the recording industry and blocked trading of nearly all copyrighted material. We're sure that will lead to a ton of searches as people try to figure out what happened. This Wired News article has more.

The third mystery is a couple of weeks old, but we are only now solving the Ryan Jacob/Perfect Escape puzzle. A few weeks ago we got a ton of searches for a number of nonsense phrases such as perfect escape, perfect idea, endless ambition, etc. Some of the searches also mentioned the name Ryan Jacob. What was going on?

Thanks to the help of a geology professor named Gregory Haddock, we now know a bit more. Apparently, an email has been circulating around the Web decrying that most of the people in the world are "fakes." It's a long, drawn out rant, but at the end it asks readers to search on a number of search engines for a series of two word phases combining a word from one list with a word from second list.

It is these phrases that we noticed in the week ending June 1. The email is signed "Ryan and Jacob," which solves the question of where those names come from. What's even stranger is that the email seems to have re-started in the past two days. Yesterday we received a number of emails regarding the hoax, many of which came from Ohio State for some reason. We've seen plenty of curious things on the Internet, but this wacky email is very high on the list of all-time oddities.

TOMORROW: Hot gadget of the moment.
