Looking for the Next Soul Sister The neo-soul movement has been a welcome development in music, but the genre still needs a few more stars. We're still waiting for Lauryn Hill's second album, Erykah Badu's second album stiffed, and Macy Gray hasn't been heard from in months. Luckily, a number of new neo-soul sisters are stepping into the breach, led by the rapidly rising Alicia Keys.
Keys is only 19, but she's a musical prodigy who lists influences ranging from Chopin to Nina Simone to Tupac Shakur. Her debut album, Songs in A Minor, came out earlier this month. Music industry bigwigs rave about her talent and her stage presence, and Lycos users seem to be agreeing.
Alicia Keys searches have gone from a handful to a ton by rising 70 percent a week for 5 weeks. Last week Keys received as many searches as the pre-teen rapper Lil' Romeo, who currently has the #4 song in the country on the Billboard charts (and was a Lycos 50 One To Watch two months ago).
Like Nikka Costa, who we wrote about last week, Keys currently has a video in MTV's Buzzworthy rotation, called "Fallin'." It isn't high on the charts yet, but give it time -- after all, it took both Erykah Badu and Macy Gray months before their songs really hit it big, and they grew into stars.
Of course, Keys isn't the only neo-soul performer trying to follow in Badu and Gray's footsteps, but she's the most popular with Lycos users. Keys is now getting about five times as many searches as Sunshine Anderson was receiving at her peak in April, and four times as many searches as India Arie was receiving at her peak in March.
How different is Keys? When I asked my friend Pete Jones at All Access Music Group about her, here was his response: "At the Radio & Records Rhythm/Urban awards, she performed with just her piano. She started by talking about how great it was to be performing outside and that it made her feel like playing some different things. She then played a classical piece and then a jazzy piece before doing her stuff. Highlight of the night."
An MTV star who plays Chopin? That really is different. |
