Naturally, Paris Hilton tops the Lycos 50 this week. The American public had quite the week of Paris Hilton saturation as most news network dedicated hours of coverage to the in-and-out-of-jail socialite. Last Sunday, Hilton surrendered to authorities and commenced her stay at Lynwood Jail. After four days, on Thursday, she was released for "medical reasons" and was sent home to suffer the rest of her sentence under house arrest at her posh West Hollywood house (which, according to MSNBC's coverage, is filled with bedazzled pictures of herself - classy!).

Her house arrest did not last long. On Friday, we awoke to reports that Judge Sauer has ordered Paris back to court to determine the validity of her early release. When rumors surfaced that Paris had decided to phone in her testimony, the judge countered that she must actually appear before him. Soon, swarms of media were positioned outside of Paris's house, waiting for the sheriff's department to retrieve her. Reporters shouted a barrage of questions to each individual who approached Hilton's house (ranging from what appeared to be fans to makeup artists) and every van that pulled up (including...piano delivery?) was assumed to be the sheriff's department. Unsurprisingly, Paris waited for the coverage to actually turn to something relevant before venturing outside at which point most networks hastily cut away from that boring Pentagon back to LA.

Paris was driven to court, handcuffed and crying, as photographers chased the cruiser down the street like hungry wildebeests. One reporter was even hit by the cruiser! When one considers that Paris's crime - and sentence - are relatively minor, it truly makes the media circus seem bizarre and surreal. It appears doubtful to me that any other celebrity would cause such a stir, but Paris Hilton is so hated and such an icon of fame-for-fame's-sake that her case has riveted America with schadenfreude.

As of today, Paris is back in jail after allegedly being dragged out of court, screaming for her mom on Friday. She has told Barbara Walters that she has found religion. Grasping at straws now, are we? Still, despite her newfound peace and spirituality, her father is reportedly planning her "Get Out of Jail" bash at a Las Vegas nightclub. Because nothing says that you are changing your hard-partying ways than a party.
