(The Daily Report is on a short hiatus. The next report will appear as usual on Monday, May 22.)NASCAR's Top Drivers The death of Adam Petty last week put an unwelcome spotlight on auto racing league NASCAR. Petty's great-grandfather, Lee, was one of the sport's founders, and his grandfather Richard Petty was the sport's first big superstar.
During racing season (which now runs nearly January - October) NASCAR is a guaranteed feature on the Lycos 50. It's the hottest sports league online (not counting the WWF, which ain't really sports). Last week NASCAR was #26 on the Lycos 50, just above the NBA, which is currently in round two of its playoffs.
We wondered what other auto racers were hot, so we examined our search logs for late April (before last week's crash). The results, in order of popularity:
1. Dale Earnhardt
2. Jeff Gordon
3. Mark Martin
4. Rusty Wallace
5. Dale Jarrett
6. Michael Schumacher
7. Bobby Labonte
8. Tony Stewart
9. Richard Petty
10. Jacques Villeneuve
11. Terry Labonte
12. Kyle Petty
13. Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
14. Michael Waltrip
15. Greg Biffle
13 of those are NASCAR drivers; Schumacher and Villenueve drive Formula One. Two father-son combos make the top 15: Dale Earnhardt and Dale Jr., and Richard and Kyle Petty.
Tip o' the cowboy hat to Richard Petty for making the list 20 years after he won his last NASCAR season championship. The man's a living legend -- making his grandson's death all the more poignant.
