Spider-Man Beats Mom
May 14, 2002

Since we started the Lycos 50 in 1999, we've never had a movie make it to the #1 slot... until now. The Spider-Man hype machine has hit the top.

Spider-Man keeps Mother's Day out of the top slot and knocks Dragonball down to #3. Some movies peak the week they open, some the week after, and Spider-Man turns out to be one of the latter. The previous highest movie was The Blair Witch Project, which was #2 on our first-ever list (although we should note that the Lycos 50 does not date back to Titanic or Star Wars: Episode I).

With Episode II two days away, Star Wars is now at #4, the same position Spider-Man had before it opened, but with 40 percent more searches. Will it top Spidey's ridiculous $114 million opening weekend? The searches seem to say "yes," but since it is opening in fewer theatres, we actually guess that the answer will be "no."

Our pick for the movie that will break Spider-Man's record is The Matrix Reloaded, opening May 2003, which already gets more searches each week than 2002 blockbusters like Austin Powers 3 and Men in Black II.

Or maybe the movie to break the record will be The Hulk. The short trailer showing before Spider-Man has quadrupled searches for the big green behemoth and the 2003 movie based upon him, though it still gets fewer searches than the Matrix films. Also on the rise thanks to Spider-Man mania are searches for Marvel Comics (queries doubled in two weeks) as well as stars Kirsten Dunst (#44) and Tobey Maguire (the current #1 actor).

WWE WATCH: Why the bump in interest in the WWF (#12)? This week, to settle a lawsuit brought by the World Wildlife Fund, the WWF changed its name to the WWE ("World Wrestling Entertainment"). While the U.K. lawsuit only effected the WWF's use of the name overseas, they decided to change everywhere in order to keep the brand consistent worldwide (or because Vince McMahon is a stubborn mule who would rather force his customers to remember a new brand name than lose a court case, you decide).

It's going to take a while for wrestling fans to get used to the switch, even though the WWF is filling its program with the slogan "Get the F Out." Each week the Lycos 50 will track the progress of the WWE name change. This week, WWF had 87.5 percent of searches, with WWE getting 12.5 percent.

NOT AGAIN: Once more the Web has been flooded with a computer virus hoax that suggests that users delete a perfectly fine program from their hard drives. Back in June, people were sending an email suggesting that readers delete SULFNBK.EXE; this time, the file is JDBGMGR.EXE. (#24).

Here's a rule of thumb. If you get JDBGMGR.EXE as an email attachment, delete it. If you get any email attachment that is a mystery to you, delete it. Otherwise, leave your JDBGMGR.EXE right where it is.

This whole thing reminded a friend of an email he received last year: "This is a self-service virus. Please delete several random files in your system folder and forward this message to everyone in your address book. Thank you."

TOMORROW: Girls are writing their own songs.
