It's a Horse Race! Politics is often compared to a horse race. So in honor of last week's Kentucky Derby we've compared searches for some prominent presidential politicos to searches for the superhorse Secretariat, winner of the '73 Derby.
Secretariat, you may be interested to know, was the horse Lycos users searched for most last week, handily beating '00 Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus by several lengths. (We'll be watching to see if Fusaichi's numbers go up this week.) The numbers below are based on searches for the week ending May 6, 2000.
The odds-style numbers reflect how many searches each human got compared to Secretariat. Al Gore's 9-1 means he got 9 searches for every 1 for Secretariat. Pat Robertson's 2-5 means he got 2 searches for every 5 for Secretariat.
The full list:
9-1 Al Gore
8-1 George W. Bush
3-1 Colin Powell
2-1 Ralph Nader
2-1 John McCain
1-1 Elizabeth Dole
2-3 Pat Buchanan
1-2 Alan Keyes
2-5 Pat Robertson
1-3 Bob Dole
1-5 Lyndon LaRouche
In short, it appears that if Secretariat were running for president today he'd finish sixth, right behind McCain and tied with Elizabeth Dole. (And by the way, check out the popularity of Colin Powell. Is he sure he doesn't want to be vice-president?) Secretariat died in 1989, but of course he couldn't actually have run for president this year anyway -- he wouldn't turn 35 until 2005.
