Cinco de Mayo
May 5, 2005

For many in Mexican and Chicano communities, Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of beating the odds. Just as the biblical story of David and Goliath, which told of the underdog winning against the bully, Cinco de Mayo can be viewed as the victory of the small Mexican army against the more experienced, polished French cavalry. (However a common misconception about Cinco de Mayo is that it is Mexican Independence - September 16th is actually Mexican Independence Day and occurred almost 50 years earlier.)

FYI, searches for Cinco de Mayo are up 135% this week. Just as many non-Irish people enjoy corn beef and cabbage on St. Patrick's Day, each May 5, many of us who aren't Mexican-Americans, celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Each community celebrates in their own fashion, but much of this festive time is commemorated with parades, mariachi and Latin Music, traditional folk dancing, and then the delicious food and drink.

If you aren't able to get to a parade, listen to mariachi music, or watch folk dancing, you may be just like us, and celebrate with a burrito and an afternoon margarita. According to a recent study we came across, amidst the Mexican mariachi music and margaritas, 37.6 million pounds of avocados are expected to be consumed this Cinco de Mayo, mostly in the form of delicious guacamole recipes.
