This Week's Top 50: Embarassment for Paris
April 29, 2007

Rumor has it that Paris Hilton was served a slice of humble pie by Prince in Las Vegas last week. When Prince was performing at the Rio, he invited Paris onstage to sing with him. When she joined him onstage, he handed her the microphone and reportedly said, "Let's see if she can really sing." At this point, a humiliated Paris stormed offstage and out of the club. Paris's representatives deny that this happened.

In other Paris-related news, a naked sculpture of the heiress with removable innards is on display in Brooklyn to warn teenagers against the dangers of drunk driving. Capla Kesting Fine Art is also offering students the opportunity to take a virtual tour of the exhibit and write Paris Hilton's obituary. While I am certainly no fan of Paris, this seems particularly morbid. I am not really a traditionalist, but I think I prefer the works of Matisse or Van Gogh to Paris Hilton's vital organs. I've seen way more of the girl than I ever needed already, thanks.

New York, naturally, has a history of housing controversial art exhibits. In 1999, the Brooklyn Museum almost lost $7 million in city funding with an exhibit featuring mutilated pigs, a dung-splattered Virgin Mary, and a portrait of a child killer. More recently, a display of a six-foot chocolate Jesus at the Lab Gallery in midtown Manhattan caused a stir with Christian groups. Who could be angry about chocolate?
