Hommage à John Steinbeck Author John Steinbeck is still being read in our schools, if Web searches are any indication.
I hope Mr. Steinbeck's estate will forgive me for thinking he had become one of the more forgotten 20th-century authors, tossed aside by the waves of high school modernism. Not so! Week in and week out he's one of the most-searched authors we see. Last week he was neck-and-neck with those 19th-century hotties Charles Dickens and Walt Whitman.
Steinbeck gets about 50% of the total searches of Ernest Hemingway, but then you expect a glamourpuss like Hemingway to pile up the searches. On the other hand, Steinbeck gets double the queries of flapper scribe F. Scott Fitzgerald.
These seem to be the most popular Steinbeck books, in order:
1. Of Mice and Men
2. The Grapes of Wrath
3. The Pearl
4. East of Eden
5. Cannery Row
6. Tortilla Flat
7. Chrysanthemums
8. The Red Pony
We sure would have thought that "The Grapes of Wrath" would take the top spot there. And "The Pearl" beats "Cannery Row"? Fascinating. The final three, "Chrysanthemums" and "The Red Pony" and "Tortilla Flat," get so little interest that some weeks they don't get any searches at all.
Finally, a brief pecuniary note: you can buy any of Mr. Steinbeck's books from our cheerful partners at Barnes & Noble.
