Hot Topic: Unclaimed Money
One of the hottest topics on the Web right now isn't a movie or a musician. It's unclaimed money.
Searches for unclaimed money doubled two weeks ago and then doubled again last week. Right now, the phrase unclaimed money is as popular as Bon Jovi or WWF pinup Trish Stratus.
The phrase unclaimed property also gets its share of searches, about 10 percent as many as unclaimed money. Both terms always received a moderate number of searches but have jumped significantly over the past two weeks, and we aren't sure why.
What qualifies as unclaimed money? Well, among the assets you can search for are dormant bank accounts, uncashed money orders, unclaimed insurance benefits, and stock certificates you never knew were in your name.
Lycos has links to a number of websites that will help you search for unclaimed money. States are required by law to offer you claims processing as a free public service, so be wary of sites that offer you services for a fee.
Set out on an unclaimed money search, and you'll be a prospector in the 21st century goldrush. Good luck finding some nuggets in the cyberstream.
