Many of you may fondly recall that infamous line when you watched the satirical news updates from SNL and the humorous banter between Weekend Update anchors Jane Curtin & Dan Aykroyd. Flash forward things haven't really changed, now it's Tina Fey & Jimmy Fallon...
2004 - Election Year. This year, more than any other, people are searching for their political information through alternative sources. Are the network news anchors facing possible extinction? In today's world, we wonder who can make it home in time for the 6 o'clock news. In fact, a recent Pew Research Center survey revealed that only 23 percent of young people get their campaign news from network anchors.
The Pew survey also shows that an incredible 21 percent of young viewers look to humor shows like The Daily Show with Jon Stewart for news. So we scoured our search logs over the past three months and learned a great deal about who you go to for information. None of the three network news anchors, Peter Jennings, Tom Brokaw nor Dan Rather were able to break the top 20. Of the three, Tom Brokaw gets the most searches.
This got us thinking of which news personalities have the most clout, influence, prestige, prominence over you, in this election year. So let's meet the handful of folks that intrigued us the most.
At number 11, it's Gideon Yago. Think Geek Chic. Gideon is the host of MTV's 2004 Choose or Lose - a voter registration drive. MTV's theme, "20 Million Loud," is the number of young people ages 18 to 30 that they hope will be encouraged to vote in this election. Yago's interview with John Kerry turned out to be the highest rated cable show for the time slot, even whipping Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. President George Bush has, up to this point, refused to be on the show.
Bill O'Reilly (#7), Rush Limbaugh (#6) and Sean Hannity (#3) each with substantial radio and television audiences, remain some of the nation's most ubiquitous conservative voices.
Laurie Dhue, the not news anchor from the FOX News Channel, has been getting web searches ever since September 11th. Dhue serves as a news update anchor as well as host of weekend specials. She surely will be one to watch during this election year, and we are curious to see if the candidates make a weekend stop on her show FOX Magazine.
Matt Drudge lands at number one on our list. And so that you know, we did not count the enormous amount of searches he received after Janet's wardrobe malfunction, when the Drudge Report posted the nipple pics nor did we count searches for 'Drudge Report'. More than any of the network television personalities, Drudge is the one-stop political source for gossip, news and information. We do understand that the site is a 'link honey,' but Drudge is able to aggregate all the news in one place. We know we have the Drudge Report bookmarked...
Here is the total list of most influential leaders during this election year, based on Web searches:
