Classic Country Queries

Country music is a hot radio format, but the genre's less popular with Web searchers. The Lycos 50 is littered with pop and rap groups, but Shania Twain is the only country regular -- and she dropped off the list two weeks ago.

Still, the list of the Web's most-requested country stars remains quite interesting. We scanned the top 50,000 user search terms from the week ending April 2 for the names of country music acts. The top 25 artists?

1.   Shania Twain
2.   Faith Hill
3.   Dixie Chicks
4.   Garth Brooks
5.   George Strait

6.   Tim McGraw
7.   Lonestar
8.   Dolly Parton
9.   LeAnn Rimes
10.  Kenny Rogers

11.  Vince Gill
12.  Martina McBride
13.  Willie Nelson
14.  Trisha Yearwood
15.  Alan Jackson

16.  Diamond Rio
17.  Johnny Cash
18.  Chely Wright
19.  SheDaisy
20.  Clay Walker

21.  Hank Williams, Jr.
22.  Alison Krauss
23.  Reba McEntire
24.  Toby Keith
25.  George Jones

Give country music credit for gender and age equality, at least. With pop stars you've got to make your way through a lot of Britneys and Christinas before you come to a male solo artist (and then it's Ricky Martin). Country queries run the gamut from 18-year-old LeAnn Rimes to 68-year-old George Jones. Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash are no spring chickens, either. What pop music stars do you know who are pushing 70? (Madonna excepted.)

That's not to say that country music is totally free of the hubba-hubba factor. Dolly Parton is a marvelous singer, but we don't think it's her singles that keep her in the top 10. And it's probably no coincidence that Shania, Faith and the Dixie Chicks go 1-2-3 on the Web search scale. 'Twas ever thus.

The top 25 has a few debatable entries. Kenny Rogers is also the name of a baseball pitcher and a fried chicken franchise, Diamond Rio is also the name of a portable music player, and Lone Star is also a beverage. We've given the musicians the benefit of the doubt, though, and we're pretty sure the results are accurate.

Note: all search spellings and variations are included in each artist's total; for instance, the LeAnn Rimes entry includes searches for both Lee Ann Rimes and LeAnn Rhimes. This list reflects actual terms entered into our search engine by Lycos users during the week ending April 2nd; it does not imply endorsement by Lycos of any musical belief or lifestyle. Please consult a qualified professional before making any album purchases.

    Mystery Term

    Today's mystery term:

    GIOCHI

Gaming fans, this one's for you. Giochi has been rising steadily for six weeks; it seems to mean "games" in Italian. But why an Italian search term on our U.S. servers? Does giochi have some other meaning?

If you have an insight, please speak up on our boards message boards. Thank you!
