"American Idol" remains in the top 50 for the seventh week in a row. "American Idol," which many might argue jumped the shark years ago, has become something of an absurdity this season. The show first made a stir when the untalented Antonella Barba had nude photos released on the Internet. After Antonella was kicked off of "American Idol," and seemed to fade into that special oblivion of untalented people who have had nude photos released on the Internet, the American public became obsessed with the equally untalented Sanjaya Malakar.

Sanjaya Malakar has not appeared in nude photos (as far as we know, and let's hope that if he has, we NEVER see them!). His dubious claim to fame is just being hilariously awful and having incredibly high maintenance hair. Sanjaya has created such a stir that he has even forced some "Idol" fans into a hunger strike. (Incidentally, Sanjaya's own fans refer to themselves as "Fanjayas." How mortifying is that?)

This week, the show will feature Jennifer Lopez as the Idols' mentor and Sanjaya, yet again, doing something too embarassing for words. Though "American Idol" continues to be an extremely popular show, perhaps it really has jumped the shark for real this time. At one point, fans cared most about voting for their favorites and the show gave birth to great talents like Kelly Clarkson. Carrie Underwood, Clay Aiken and Chris Daughtry are very successful recording artists. This year, the camp factor seems to outweigh even the true talent of contestants like Melinda Doolittle. (To be honest, while I like Melinda, her presence is kind of forgettable...which is probably why fans prefer gossiping about a doof like Sanjaya.)

How much lower can "American Idol" sink? Perhaps next year, we'll actually see the contestants performing naked to the pervy amusement of Simon Cowell (who, let's face it, is laughing at us all).
