Equally Popular: Know Your Military Hardware
April 9, 2003

On Thursday nights, David Letterman likes to play a game called Know Your Current Events, also dubbed the Five Big Ways to Win Big because of a variety of categories running the gamut from Know Your Cuts of Meat to Know Your Vintage Pro Wrestler Submission Holds.

Here at the Lycos 50, we like to play a game called Equally Popular, where we identify a series of search terms and then another series of totally unrelated search terms that received the same number of queries in the previous week.

Today we've decided to combine the two games, and help you learn about our armed forces in Iraq at the same time. It's time for Equally Popular: Know Your Military Hardware. Below are just some of the military vehicles and planes getting searches on Lycos because of the war, ranked from most searches to fewest searches during the week ending April 5, along with a short description and three terms that were equally popular.

MOAB BOMB
The big enchilada, a 21,000-pound armament that is known as the "mother of all bombs." Even though it is the specific military term most often searched on Lycos, as far as we can tell the MOAB hasn't even been used yet.
Equally popular: Brad Pitt, Easter Bunny, University of Washington

M-1 ABRAMS TANK
The army's main offensive ground weapon, named after former Army Chief of Staff General Creighton Abrams. It's been around for a while, upgraded regularly, and the current iteration is the M1A2.
Equally popular: Rugby, Euchre, kidney stones

A-10 WARTHOG
Nicknamed the "Warthog" because of its unusual and somewhat ugly appearance, the A-10 is basically a flying Gatling gun with seven rotating barrels that take up most of the fuselage. The A-10 is not designed for speed or air-to-air conflict; its purpose is to fly low, surprise enemy troops with fire, and quickly return to base.
Equally popular: R.E.M., Queer as Folk, University of Oregon

B-52 BOMBER
B-2 STEALTH BOMBER
Our two main bombers received the exact same number of searches last week. The B-52 is the old warhorse that's been around since the 1950s, with 94 of the original 744 planes still in service, dropping cruise missiles on Iraq. The B-2 is the wacky triangle-shaped plane that avoids radar and causes headaches during congressional appropriation debates.
Equally popular: Mexican food, Rage Against The Machine, Honda Element

F-22 RAPTOR
Not named after Vince Carter, the F-22 will be the fighter equivalent of the B-2, a radar-avoiding fighter jet that can engage in air combat or drop precision munitions to the ground. It isn't being used in Iraq, since it won't be operational until 2005.
Equally popular: Noam Chomsky, hate crimes, salmon recipes

BRADLEY FIGHTING VEHICLES
Not one specific vehicle, but a family of lighter, more mobile tanks that accompany the more powerful Abrams on its missions. The main versions are the M2A3 (infantry) and M3A3 (cavalry).
Equally popular: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Stevie Wonder, Vans shoes

F-16 FALCON
The F-16 was the most commonly used fighter-bomber in Gulf War I, and it is getting plenty of use in the sequel.
Equally popular: George Carlin, Sean Connery, Carmelo Anthony

F-15 EAGLE
The Air Force's main tactical fighter, this plane is getting a ton of use in Iraq but will soon be replaced by the F-22. It is a heavier fighter than the F-16.
Equally popular: Cadillac Escalade, Real Madrid, Paul Harvey

FLAT BONE SIRLOIN
Wait a minute, I'm getting confused with Letterman again. Flat Bone Sirloin is a cut of meat, not a piece of military hardware.

TOMORROW: Simple rock comes on.
