The Lycos 50 Daily Report
 The things you're searching for.April 9-10, 2001

United Nations

Back in January we looked at the top travel cities online; today we take a look at the top countries.

We left out the United States, and we separated Great Britain into England, Scotland, and Wales. The surprising #1: Australia. Eight months after the Olympics, the land down under continues to be hot on Lycos, both with travelers and with Aussies who use Lycos.com to search in their homeland. Australia gets nearly 80 percent more searches than #2 Mexico.

Here are the Top 20 countries based on last week's Lycos searches:

1)  Australia
2)  Mexico
3)  Italy
4)  Japan
5)  Canada
6)  France
7)  China
8)  Germany
9)  Ireland
10) Spain

11) India
12) Egypt
13) Cuba
14) Greece
15) Brazil
16) Costa Rica
17) Jamaica
18) Vietnam
19) Philippines
20) England

We don't include countries on the Lycos 50, except during news events, because many international users are searching for specific results for their own countries with Lycos.com. Country searches are often driven by these searches, rather than interest in the countries by those outside. If we did include countries on the Lycos 50, Australia would be #31, and Mexico would be #47.

Some interesting things we discovered: Germany, for some reason, is a very popular country for maps. Vietnam the nation gets fewer searches than Vietnam the war. The Philippines is by far the most-often misspelled nation (Philipines, Phillipines, and the Spanish spelling Filipinas). The Dominican Republic gets more searches than you might expect (thanks to baseball season, perhaps?). Israel gets fewer searches than you might expect.

The new Lycos 50 will appear on Wednesday this week, not Tuesday, due to the Passover holiday.
