Hip-hop fashion has powered youth culture since the days of Kangols and Adidas, but the last six months have really seen hip-hop fashion fads hit the Internet for the first time. First came searches for Nike Air Force Ones, powered by popular rapper Nelly's paean to his customized kicks. Now, following on the heels of Air Force Ones, come searches for another hot fad from the same video: NBA jersey dresses.

Throwback sports jerseys have been big in hip-hop for more than a year now, with popular rappers sporting old school looks from Julius Erving's Virginia Squires jersey to the classic Astros rainbow. Now, the ladies are getting into the act with slinky dresses designed like classic NBA jerseys, but extended to cover the backside and calves.

Searches for jersey dresses first showed up in early January, but they really started to take off after Mariah Carey wore one based on Michael Jordan's classic Chicago uniform while singing a tribute to Jordan at the 2003 NBA All-Star Game on February 9 (you can find a picture of it at the bottom of this page on NBA.com).

They also appear in Nelly's hugely popular video, "Air Force Ones" -- the same video that also spawned the still-continuing craze for customized Nike Air Force One sneakers -- and commercials for both ESPN (starring Nelly himself) and Reebok (with rappers Eve and Fabolous).

In the world of hip-hop culture, jersey dresses reign supreme right now. Last week they got more searches on Lycos than Jay-Z, Nas, or LeBron James. Believe it or not, they are even popular as prom dresses. Now if only they could make a tux in classic Padres colors.
