Movers and Shakers: April Fool's Day!
April 2, 2008

April Fool's Day topped the Movers and Shakers chart this week rising 715%. Sometimes called All Fools' Day, the origins of the April 1 holiday are uncertain, although some believe it was a celebration related to the turn of the seasons. It has become common for people to fall victim to pranks throughout the day and whatever the prank, the trickster invariably yells "April Fool!" Some of the greatest pranks of all time include: In 2003, CNN announced their decision to accept war sponsors, featuring sponsors' logos during war reports. Also, when fans tuned into the Howard Stern show during a 2004 broadcast, they were met with perky morning duo, Cross and Lopez, promising fun without all the filth. The duo played Clay Aiken songs among other top 40 hits and discussed upcoming movies. Google has been known for their pranks over the years, like in 2006 when Google announced Google Copernicus, hiring qualified employees who don't mind relocating to the Moon. This year, when Google Gmail users logged into their email accounts, they were notified of a new feature called Google Custom Time, a service allowing users to send e-mails from the past.

Demi Moore shot up the chart this week 300%, due in part to a recent appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman where she announced she's a huge fan of a detox treatment called leech therapy. "I've always been somebody looking for the cutting edge of things that are for optimizing your health and healing, so just a week ago I was in Austria doing a cleanse and part of the treatment was leech therapy," she told Letterman. Moore went on to say she felt revitalized after the treatment and plans to do it again.

The Nickelodeon 2008 Kids' Choice Awards gained 189% this week. The 20th annual show aired Sat., March 29, hosted by Jack Black and spotlighting the hottest TV, movie, music and sports stars. A few of this year'swinners included: Johnny Depp for "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" and Jessica Alba for "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" as Favorite Movie Actor and Actress. "Alvin and the Chipmunks" and "Ratatouille" grabbed Favorite Movie and Favorite Animated Movie, while TV awards went to "American Idol" as Favorite Reality Show and "Drake & Josh" as Favorite TV Show. Miley Cyrus, a.k.a Hannah Montana, walked off with Favorite TV Actress and Favorite Female Singer. For sports, Tony Hawk and Danica Patrick scored for Favorite Male and Female Athlete. In the music category, Chris Brown scored Favorite Male Singer, The Jonas Brothers won as top group and Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" won for Favorite Song. Finally, The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling was the Kid's Choice Favorite Book.

Other Movers and Shakers this week include Vogue Magazine, up 654% due to the new controversial April issue. The new film "21" starring Kate Bosworth and Kevin Spacey trumped the box office and raked in a 322% increase in search activity. Kim Kardashian gained 200% this week while hosting the WWE Wrestle Mania and Angelina Jolie jumped up 455% after rumors she and Brad Pitt got married. Jolie and Pitt quickly put those rumors to rest.
