End of an Era
April 2, 2002

This week marks a significant event in the history of the Lycos 50. After 136 weeks on our list, longtime #1 topic Pokemon has fallen off the Lycos 50 for the first time.

Pokemon was the first-ever #1 on the Lycos 50 when we started counting back in August 1999. It was #1 for the entire year 1999. It was #1 every single week from January 4 through July 25 of 2000 -- not even Valentine's Day or Easter could knock it out to the top slot.

But in June 2000 we noticed that it began to falter. It dropped out of the top slot in July and out of the top ten in October. It then stayed in the top 20 for over a year before plunging to the bottom of the list in December 2001. Now, after 136 weeks, it is gone (#53, to be exact).

The demise of Pokemon means that only one Japanese cartoon remains on the Lycos 50 -- the unstoppable Dragonball (#3). Once upon a time four or five Japanese cartoons were on the list each week. Don't fret though, anime fans, as the toy-turned-cartoon Zoids is at #57 and an appearance on the Lycos 50 is just around the corner.

HOLIDAZE: For the first time, Easter makes #1 the week before the holiday, instead of just after. And, in the interest of equal time, Passover makes it all the way up to #20. Martha Stewart (#38) searches, of course, always go up for holidays.

ACADEMY FIGHT SONG: The Academy Awards (#2) were very big with Lycos searchers this year. Halle Berry's emotional victory speech gets her all the way up to #10 on the list. Award winners Jennifer Connelly and Denzel Washington also got a boost in searches, though they were short of the Lycos 50, and searches for honorary Oscar winner Sidney Poitier were up twenty-fold.

As always, the Oscar fashion show also led to a number of searches. The top two Oscar outfits seemed to belong to Uma Thurman, whose motherhood-enhanced body required a bigger bra than usual, and Gwyneth Paltrow, who forgot to wear her bra altogether. She must have left it on the counter or something.

CHU ON THIS: Chu Mei-Feng(#22) goes back up again. We've looked closely at the searches for the scandalized Taiwanese politician-turned-singer, and while early on most searches came from outside the United States, now most searches for Mei-Feng are coming from U.S. Internet providers. We're absolutely, positively stumped by the question of who is still interested in this story, and why.

MOVIE MAYHEM: Anticipation for summer blockbusters is high, with Star Wars (#35) and now Spider-Man (#45) making the Lycos 50. The pre-summer blockbuster vampire movie Blade II (#48) also makes the list this week.

SHORT SUBJECTS: First R&B singer Ashanti (#36) showed up, and now her duet partner Ja Rule has also made the Lycos 50... Jeff Gordon's divorce drops from #2 to #26... Interest in the NFL draft just gets hotter and hotter, with the not-in-season NFL now at #15 and rising... Speaking of drafts, the WWF (#8) got a lot of searches for its "draft" that split the roster of wrestlers into those performing only on Monday's Raw and those performing only on Thursday's Smackdown.

NEW THIS WEEK: Halle Berry, Passover, Brooke Burke, Martha Stewart, prom hairstyles, Spider-Man, Audiogalaxy, Blade II, Ja Rule.

DROPOUTS: Pokemon (after 136 weeks), NBA (after 11 weeks), cloning, Survivor, Linkin Park, Greek mythology, Andrea Yates, presa canarios, and boy band B2K (#51 by only a handful of searches).

ONE YEAR AGO: Pop icon Jennifer Lopez tops our list for the first time ever, thanks to her see-through purple dress at the 2001 Academy Awards. She's currently #23.

TOMORROW: What happened to The Simpsons?
