Top Baseball Stars 2001 Edition Here's an update on last year's report on top baseball players. Once again, retired and deceased players take prominent positions on the list? and yes, we've included erstwhile Cincinnati minor leaguer Deion Sanders again.
The number in parentheses is last year's ranking, and active players are marked with an asterisk, just like Roger Maris' 61st homer. Notice the nice showing by new Hall of Famer Bill Mazeroski.
1. Jackie Robinson (1)
2. Babe Ruth (2)
3. Hank Aaron (6)
4. Derek Jeter (4)*
5. Mark McGwire (5)*
6. Lou Gehrig (16)
7. Roberto Clemente (10)
8. Sammy Sosa (7)*
9. Willie Mays (13)
10. Alex Rodriguez (19)*
11. Joe DiMaggio (9)
12. Ken Griffey, Jr. (8)*
13. Deion Sanders (17)*
14. Satchel Paige (15)
15. Mickey Mantle (14)
16. Pedro Martinez (18)*
17. Pete Rose (-)
18t. Nomar Garciaparra (20)*
18t. Mike Piazza (11)*
20. Bill Mazeroski (-)
21t. Frank Thomas (-)*
21t. Ted Williams (21)
23. Ty Cobb (23)
24. Josh Gibson (-)
25. Nolan Ryan (-)
26. Chipper Jones (12)*
27. Yogi Berra (-)
28. John Rocker (3)*
29. Gabe Kapler (-)*
30. Pat Burrell (-)*
Last year we ranked 23 players, 11 of who were retired or dead. This year we rank 30, and 16 of those are retired or dead.
We're including more players this year because the last two are somewhat interesting. Texas OF Gabe Kapler is actually well-known as a bodybuilder as well as a ballplayer, and many searches ask for pictures. Phillies OF Pat Burrell has recently been under fire thanks to his controversial comments in a Penthouse interview? apparently, this strapping young athlete actually enjoys looking at women and having sex. Shocker!
Check out last year's column.
