The Lycos 50 Daily Report
 The things you're searching for.March 9, 2001

One to Watch:
Enemy at the Gates

Right now, the number one movie at the box office is The Mexican, a comedy about small-time criminals starring two of Hollywood's biggest celebrities, Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt. The Mexican received a good number of searches last week: nowhere near as many as current movie search champ Hannibal, but as many as rocker Lenny Kravitz or Star Trek pinup Jeri Ryan.

But there is another movie which isn't getting a lot of attention, but received twice as many searches as The Mexican last week even though it doesn't open until next Friday: Enemy at the Gates.

Enemy at the Gates is not what you might consider a typical blockbuster. Usually, films that do well online are action pictures and effects-driven science fiction films. Although it is the most expensive film ever produced in Europe at $85 million, Enemy is a World War II epic. The film's opening has been delayed several times; it was initially supposed to open in December in order to be available for Oscar contention.

Though the film stars many solid actors, the biggest name is probably Jude Law, who is no great shakes in search terms. Law gets less than 15 percent as many searches as Mexican star Brad Pitt. The female lead is little-known Rachel Weisz, who's only major starring role to date was Evie in The Mummy. Other stars include Joseph Feinnes (Shakespeare in Love) and Ed Harris, currently nominated for Best Actor for the little-seen Pollock.

Even more astounding, the hero of the film is neither American not British; he's Russian (though the movie is in English). The movie details the mano-a-mano battles between the Russian army's greatest sniper, Vasiliy Zaitsev (Jude Law), and SS Colonel Heinz Thorwald (Ed Harris), sent to the Battle of Stalingrad by the Germans specifically to eliminate Zaitsev.

Despite this unorthodox story, Enemy at the Gates is clearly motivating Lycos users. The film saw searches jump by 350 percent last week. Last week it received 85 percent as many searches as that other famous World War II battle-turned-movie, Pearl Harbor. In addition, searches for Rachel Weisz have been steadily rising for ten weeks, going up 20 percent per week.

Enemy looks even better when compared to other movies coming out in the next two weeks. It gets six times as many searches as the teen romance Get Over It, 24 times as many as the Robert DeNiro thriller 15 Minutes, and an astonishing 60 times as many searches as the gross-out comedy Say It Isn't So, which so far looks like an online dud.
