Unbelievable but true: for the second week in a row Web users kept the now-famous Jennifer Lopez Grammy dress at #13 on the Lycos 50.
Lopez and her dress were more popular than the Backstreet Boys, Nascar and the Grammy Awards themselves, which plummeted 19 places to #22. Surfers are just dying to see that sternum-baring outfit -- which truth be told isn't that handsome. (Is it?)
Other key points from this week's Lycos 50:
STILL NO POLITICIANS: Super Tuesday is here, but no presidential candidates cracked the Lycos 50 this week. In fact the week's hottest political term was not a person but a place: Bob Jones University. The brouhaha over George W. Bush's February appearance there almost drove BJU into the Lycos 50 -- the school ended up at #59 for the week.
DRAGONBALL TOPPLES BRITNEY: After months of lurking just behind Britney Spears, Japanese TV show Dragonball jumps past the teen songbird to claim the #2 spot this week. Dragonball has been hot stuff online since debuting on the Cartoon Network last year, and this week it stands second only to 800-pound gorilla Pokemon in popularity. (And could Britney finally be weakening just a little?)
CAT (IN THE HAT) AND MOUSE: Children's author Dr. Seuss makes his first-ever appearance on the Lycos 50 thanks to Read Across America day, which fell on his birthday last week. Seuss (real name: Theodore Geisel) was born on March 2, 1904.
Another hot day was February 29, making its quadrennial appearance: Leap Year Day is #50 on this week's list. St. Patrick's Day (#37) is also coming on strong.
WHO WANTS TO FORGET ALL ABOUT IT? The Who Wants to Marry A Millionaire craze finally ended this week. Queries for the show, bride Darva Conger and groom Rick Rockwell all dropped off our list this week.
Also disappearing, after a four-week February run, was Black History Month. Dr. Martin Luther King, however, remains on the list for his ninth straight week.
SHORT SUBJECTS: Teen tennis heartthrob Anna Kournikova jumps to #19 this week on news that she's engaged to hockey star Pavel Bure. She's 18, he's 29... Campus music craze Napster finally makes the Lycos 50 after several weeks of close calls... 7 of the top 25 terms were unchanged in the rankings this week, one of our steadiest weeks ever... Football is back (already) thanks to interest in the NFL draft... Rapper DMX has quietly moved up to #25, his highest position ever.
NEW THIS WEEK: Dr. Seuss, Napster, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, St. Patrick's Day, football, golf, the NBA, Leap Year Day.
DROPOUTS: Actress/pinup Jessica Biel, love poems, Black History Month, black history heroine Harriet Tubman, TV show Who Wants To Marry a Millionaire, embarrassed bride Darva Conger, gloomy groom Rick Rockwell, boyfriend-bashing skater Tonya Harding.
BIGGEST RISE: Bride-to-be Anna Kournikova, up 26.
BIGGEST DROP: The Grammy Awards, down 19.
FINAL FACTOID: One in every four people spells Dr. Seuss's name as "Dr. Suess."
