The Dope on Dope Thanks to boards we've been thinking about marijuana lately. Why is it so consistently popular with searchers? Today we'll share a few conclusions. Here's a list of the pot-related queries that appeared in the top 50,000 queries last week, in order of popularity: marijuana marijuana pictures cannabis marihuana marajuana marijuana pics cannibus canabis marijuana bud pics marijuana pipes effects of marijuana pictures of marijuana canibus marijuana facts marijuanna cannabis seeds growing marijuana marijana marijuana laws The word marijuana probably accounts for 85% of all such queries, on average. Incidentally, we don't count "dope" or "weed" in our Lycos 50 tallies because there's really no way to tell what those people are looking for -- though common sense suggests that many of them are looking for pot. (We also recently discovered that Canibus is the name of a rapper, which confuses that result some.) As this list shows, we don't seem to get many queries explicitly about the legal, medical or ethical angles on marijuana. But we do see that marijuana queries are often linked with AIDS and cancer. That makes us think that many of those one word marijuana queries are from people interested in medical uses more than getting stoned. But we can't be sure, and overall we suspect most queries for pot are from people interested in pot for pot's sake. What all those people hunting for marijuana pictures have in mind, we just don't know. Presumably they want to have a dope-leaf wallpaper or background for their computer screens -- always a sophisticated touch. Or after all, perhaps Lycos is simply a favorite with Woody Harrelson.
