One To Watch: Amanda Detmer

The new romantic comedy Saving Silverman may not be lighting up the box office, but it is making online stars its twin Amandas.

The better known of the two is Amanda Peet. Peet stars in the low-rated sitcom Jack and Jill on the WB network, but she is building a much stronger movie career. She's probably best-known for going through nearly all of the movie The Whole Nine Yards naked, as well as the lead role in the romantic comedy Whipped last summer. She was voted one of People's 50 Most Beautiful People in the World 2000. And, according to this Tripod fan page, she has big feet.

Peet searches doubled after Silverman hit theatres three weeks ago, but she isn't the hottest Amanda from the movie. While Peet gets more searches, Amanda Detmer has seen a much faster rise, getting twelve times as many searches this week as she did three weeks ago.

It's been a slow climb for Detmer, who has wanted to be an actress for a long time (check out this article from the Cal State Chico student newspaper) and later went to NYU acting school. She's had some small roles in recent teen flicks, including the comedy Boys and Girls and thriller Final Destination. She also played opposite Real World refugee Colin Mortensen in the failed NBC comedy M.Y.O.B.

It may be a supporting role, but her spot in Silverman (she plays the girl that Jason Biggs' friends use to try to get him to dump Amanda Peet) seems to have really launched her career to another level. Of course, a half-naked modeling shot in the latest Stuff Magazine helps.

What's next for the twin Amandas? Well, Amanda Detmer will play an actress opposite Jim Carrey in The Majestic, while Amanda Peet is filming Changing Lanes with Ben Affleck and Samuel L. Jackson.

TOMORROW: Where are all the hot new bands?

    Return of Mystery Terms

Well, we now have two possibilities for manyak. It seems to refer to Turkish bulletin boards, but it is also the name of a Filipino porn site. Turkey vs. The Phillipines: sounds like a first-round Olympic boxing match to me.

Thanks to message board posters jonreeves and animanga.

We are still trying to figure out leather braids, and why there is a sudden interest in Zoroastrianism. If you know anything about these terms, please email us or respond via the new clubs message board.
