Apolo 15
February 26, 2002

Start with a Sports Illustrated cover story, add tons of NBC attention, and toss in not one or two but three short track speed skating controversies. That's the recipe of hype that makes Apolo Anton Ohno the most popular athlete of the Olympics, week two.

The Olympics, as expected, take over the #1 slot this week. The much-hyped Ohno comes in #15 on the Lycos 50, behind only Anna Kournikova (#11) among athletes.

By the way, this is officially the first article written about Ohno that doesn't have the title "Oh no, Ohno."

Figure skaters Michelle Kwan and Jamie Sale are #41 and #48, respectively. Surprisingly, figure skating gold medalist Sarah Hughes does not make the Lycos 50. In fact, she gets fewer than half as many searches as Kwan does.

You might expect figure skating to be the #1 most-searched Olympic sport. Not even close. It seems figure skating fans search for their favorite skaters, but not for the sport in general. No, the highest searches are for the great hockey tournament at #26 (like the all-star game, but with defense!). Just below the Lycos 50, snowboarding is #54, and curling is #56 -- way ahead of figure skating. Many of those searches are for curling rules.

Other sports are going on still, despite the Olympics. Daytona-fueled NASCAR is #10 on this week's list, with baseball rising to #32 thanks to spring training interest. The NFL is still hot at #16 thanks to NFL draft searches.

In not-really-sports news, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue is #29. The top searched SI models can be found on a bonus list to the right.

MORE HYPE: Actually, a FOX Sports anchorwoman finds herself much more popular than any SI swimsuit model this week. How did Lisa Guerrero, from FOX's The Best Damn Sports Show Period, get to #33 on the Lycos 50?

The answer begins with a column by T. J. Simers in Wednesday's Los Angeles Times that joked about a racy picture of Guerrero on the FOX Sports website -- which is powered, of course, by Lycos.

Go to Guerrero's section on the site and a picture of the reporter interviewing Texas pitcher Chan Ho Park dissolves into one of her posing braless, with an unbuttoned blouse and a come-hither look.

That one column seems to have gotten Guerrero fans buzzing, as they flooded both FOX Sports and their partners -- namely, us -- with searches for Guerrero. In fact, since the article mentioned that the foxsports.com keyword for Guerrero's picture was Lisa G, half the searches on Lycos were for just that, not Lisa Guerrero.

TOMB RAIDER REDUX: Resident Evil is the next big video game-to-movie translation. It's a horror movie, actually, featuring a military unit that fights zombies and monsters. The game itself actually made the Lycos 50 back in December 1999.

Given that the film stars slender model Milla Jovovich rather than a bunch of computer drawings, Resident Evil's ticket sales are likely to be closer to Tomb Raider than to the disaster that was Final Fantasy. The film hits theaters March 15.

NOT THE DOGMA GUY: The show's been off the air, but the Web is still chock full of Xena fans. New Zealand actor Kevin Smith, who portrayed Ares on the hit show, nearly makes the Lycos 50 (he's #60) after a fatal fall from a tower two weeks ago. The other Kevin Smith, creator of Jay and Silent Bob, is still alive -- much to the consternation of P. T. Anderson.

SHORT SUBJECTS: Janet Jackson's (#50) HBO concert special puts her back in the spotlight... World Trade Center drops out after 23 weeks, leaving New York City (#35) as the only September 11-related topic still in the Lycos 50... Last week's #1, Valentine's Day, drops out of the Lycos 50, but like last year love poems (#48) stay on for an extra week.

NEW THIS WEEK: Apolo Anton Ohno, hockey, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, Lisa Guerrero, Michelle Kwan, Resident Evil, Aaliyah, Josh Hartnett, World War II, Janet Jackson.

DROPOUTS: World Trade Center, Greek mythology, Valentine's Day, Super Bowl commercials, snowboarding, Academy Awards, FBI, Waylon Jennings, Chinese New Year, Westminster Dog Show.

ONE YEAR AGO: The death of Dale Earnhardt was #1 on the Lycos 50, while the enigma that was All Your Base Are Belong To Us made its first appearance at #46.

TOMORROW: More on the Olympics.
