Back in June, we ran a very popular list of the top radio hosts searched online. As we all expected, Howard Stern was #1. Down at #7 was the New York-based shock jock team of Opie and Anthony.

Well, in the last few weeks Opie and Anthony's popularity on the Internet has really blossomed. Based on New York's WNEW -- but now syndicated in 15 markets -- the duo receive more searches each week than all other radio hosts other than Stern -- and that includes Dr. Laura and Rush Limbaugh.

Like Stern, Opie and Anthony fill their show with sexual innuendo, immature humor, and enough testosterone to choke a horse (or at least a female bodybuilder). Their most famous bit is "WOW," which stands for something I might get reprimanded for mentioning in this column, but basically involves getting willing women to expose their chests to anxious young men.

We're not quite sure why, all of a sudden, Opie and Anthony are so hot. One possibility is their current "Naughty Nighties" contest, in which female listeners are encouraged to send in pictures of themselves in lingerie to be posted on the Internet.

Then again, O&A run contests involving pictures of half-naked female listeners all the time, and none of them previously had resulted in such an explosion of interest from Lycos users.
