The Super Bowl: It's The Super Bowl of Advertising!
February 12, 2002

So, what is mlife? Is it...

a) a slogan for mobile phones.
b) a copy of an MTV ad campaign from two years ago.
or, c) the most popular Super Bowl commercial online in a year when Super Bowl commercials were more popular than ever online.

The answer is all three. Despite the fact that most observers felt they weren't up to par with past years, Super Bowl commercials finished #1 on the Lycos 50 for the first time ever. They were #17 last year, and #20 in 2000. The biggest day in advertising also managed to knock the Chu Mei-Feng sex scandal (#2) out of our top spot.

Meanwhile, mlife, the inscrutable new slogan for AT&T Wireless, gets its own place on the list at #16. If the goal was to get people talking, this was one slogan that really worked. Now AT&T has to translate the slogan into sales; last week, AT&T Wireless received only 10 percent as many searches as mlife did.

We'll do our annual look deeper into searches for Super Bowl commercials tomorrow -- find out what TV show actually saw searches rise more than mlife.

PATRIOT GAMES: Of course, some people watch the Super Bowl for the game itself, which came in at #10 this week. The upset champion New England Patriots (#40) became the first NFL team to ever make the Lycos 50. Don't worry, fans of the other 31 teams -- searches for NFL Draft are already closing in on our list.

FEAR THIS: Fox wasn't the only network to get attention from the big game. NBC's counter-programming effort, a Playboy Playmate edition of the reality show Fear Factor, sparked a good deal of online interest.

Fear Factor queries tripled, while searches for all the involved Playmates also skyrocketed to, on average, about ten times as much as usual. While none of the Playmates made the Lycos 50, Stacy Sanches was the most popular, finishing #66.

MORE SPORTS: In a wave of patriotic Patriot fervor, let us not forget that the Olympics (#3) are climbing the Lycos 50 as well. Check to the right for a bonus list of the top pre-Olympics Olympians.

If the Super Bowl and the Olympics aren't enough, this week saw a big burst for the opening of the NASCAR (#27) season -- up 22 places -- and NBA (#35) searches also climbed thanks to requests for information on the all-star game.

FACE OFF: A well-known newswoman appears on the Lycos 50 this week -- and she didn't even need to pose naked. News junkies flocked to Lycos this week to find the new face of Greta Van Susteren (#41), who left CNN and reappeared at Fox News last week with an almost Rivers-esque amount of plastic surgery.

One interesting note: almost half of searches asked just for Greta or Greta Van. Guess people don't even want to try to spell "Susteren."

SHORT SUBJECTS: While her website doesn't list it, Oprah must have re-run her program on pro-anorexia websites, because the disease is inexplicably back on the Lycos 50 at #20... The unveiling of the cast to Survivor 4 puts that show back on our list at #45... Enron (#24) isn't the only item to make the Lycos 50 based on Senate hearings, as cloning (#49) returns to the list... "Nation moves on" alert: Osama bin Laden (#50) will likely fall off the list next week.

NEW THIS WEEK: Super Bowl Commercials, mlife, anorexia, Black History Month, New England Patriots, Greta Van Susteren, Survivor, World War II, Shakespeare, cloning.

DROPOUTS: The Sims (after 11 weeks), Brooke Burke, young heartthrobs Josh Hartnett and Shane West, science fair projects, not-as-embattled-as-Enron Kmart, Powerball, The Mothman Prophecies, Groundhog Day, miniseries Rose Red.

CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR: The California Lottery (#51) and the Chinese New Year (#53).

TWO YEARS AGO: Racy photos of actress Jessica Biel, which technically were child pornography since Biel was only 17 at the time, put Biel at #29 and Gear Magazine at #36.

TOMORROW: Our annual look at Super Bowl commercials.
