Black History Month

"Black History Month" is #26 on this week's Lycos 50, and the names of historical African Americans are popping up all over our search logs.

Here's a closer look. Below are the 40 most-searched-for black history terms on Lycos for the week ending February 5. We've omitted current pop culture figures like Oprah and Michael Jordan, just to give the historical figures a chance.

And while we can't give out the actual search numbers (sorry), we've ranked all the terms against the leading historical figure, Martin Luther King. MLK is ranked at 100%. Wilma Rudolph's 12% means that for every 100 people who searched for King, 12 searched for Rudolph.

For more details on any of these figures, we suggest you try the Infoplease Almanac's excellent section on Black History Month. Now, here's the list:

100%   Martin Luther King, Jr.
86%    Black history
67%    Rosa Parks
67%    Harriet Tubman
64%    Black history month
46%    African American inventors
39%    George W. Carver
38%    Slavery
35%    Jackie Robinson
34%    Langston Hughes

28%    Frederick Douglass
23%    Civil rights movement
21%    Reuben "Hurricane" Carter
21%    Booker T. Washington
18%    Jimi Hendrix
18%    Malcom X
17%    Jesse Owens
16%    Sojourner Truth
16%    Underground Railroad
16%    Famous black Americans

16%    Thurgood Marshall
16%    Harlem Renaissance
15%    Walter Payton
15%    Black Panthers
14%    Black poetry
14%    Louis Armstrong
13%    Benjamin Banneker
12%    Duke Ellington
12%    Wilma Rudolph
10%    Black scientists

10%    Colin Powell
10%    NAACP
9%     Marian Anderson
8%     Hank Aaron
8%     Billie Holliday
7%     W.E.B. DuBois
6%     Crispus Attucks
6%     Ella Fitzgerald
6%     Nat Turner
5%     Josephine Baker

A few of the contemporary people we didn't list: Oprah Winfrey would be at about 70%, Tyra Banks tied with Parks and Tubman at 67%, Michael Jordan at about 56%, Maya Angelou at 36%, and rapper DMX at 99% of King's total.

Incidentally, the terms black and African American seem to be used interchangably, with a slight volume edge to black. Inventors was the one term where African American was the clear favorite.
