Welcome to the finale of our Lycos 50 Music Awards.
As with yesterday's lists, we've taken the top 50,000 user search terms from the week ending January 22 and scanned for the names of active music acts. Listed below are the 10 most popular artists in three categories: rock, pop, and country. For comparison we've also listed each category's five Grammy nominees for best album.
(Please note: photos and bios of all these artists can be found at Lycos Music. And our chums at Barnes & Noble sell the CDs.)

Limp Bizkit
Tom Petty
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Santana |
In two short years Korn has risen from Nowheresville to the top of the rock heap. Also mounting sturdy attacks are newcomers Creed and Slipknot. But you've really got to tip your cap to Metallica, now ending their second decade and still #2 with online fans. Dudes, they started playing in 1981.
Pop: Web's Top 10
1. Britney Spears
2. Backstreet Boys
3. Jennifer Lopez
4. Mariah Carey
5. N' Sync
6. Christina Aguilera
7. Madonna
8. Ricky Martin
9. Mandy Moore
10. Eiffel 65 |
|
Pop: Grammy Nominees
Backstreet Boys
Cher
Ricky Martin
Sara McLachlan
Sting |
No surprise that Britney Spears is #1 -- she's been cemented into the top five since our first Lycos 50 in August. The real surprise here is Eiffel 65, a Euro-pop band which is making strides. (Trivia tidbit: the band's name was chosen at random by a computer.)
Country: Web's Top 10
1. Shania Twain
2. Faith Hill
3. Garth Brooks
4. Dixie Chicks
5. Tim McGraw
6. George Strait
7. Dolly Parton
8. Lonestar
9. Leann Rimes
10. Reba McIntyre |
|
Country: Grammy Nominees
Asleep at the Wheel
Dixie Chicks
Harris, Parton & Ronstadt
George Jones
Alison Krauss |
Shania Twain and Faith Hill have this category locked up -- perhaps a tribute to their ha-cha-cha looks as much as their talents. (Hill's husband Tim McGraw clocks in at #5.) Good looks can't explain Garth Brooks's success, so we'll just have to give him credit for surviving his odd Chris Gaines episode last fall.
In general we see far less searches for country music than for the other four categories. The genre just isn't hot online. But country IS the category where the Web and the Grammys come closest go agreement: three country artists (counting Dolly Parton) made both lists.
That's it for this year's Lycos 50 Music Awards. Thanks for joining us! You may also enjoy our list of the top music groups of 1999.
