Furniture is fabulously popular online. We aren't sure why; perhaps it shows that people use the Web most for items of personal comfort, like sofas and martini glasses and Dean Martin CDs.
Furniture would easily rank in the Lycos 50 each week if we included such general terms. Last week the word furniture got more searches than real estate or (even more impressive) bikini. Those are formidable competitors.
For furniture buffs, here's a look at the 12 most-searched-for furniture terms on Lycos last week:
1. Furniture
2. Baby furniture
3. Office furniture
4. Bedroom furniture
5. Furniture.com
6. Computer furniture
7. Broyhill furniture
8. Children's furniture
9. North Carolina furniture
10. Bassett furniture
11. Unfinished furniture
12. Leather furniture
You've got to salute the people of Furniture.com and Broyhill and Bassett (and North Carolina) for their strong showing; it's a little unusual to see that many brand names in the top 10. (And as you may have noticed from the above links, our own LycoShop does sell furniture, too.)
Still: baby furniture is #2? And it's surprising to see how many people are interested in buying leather furniture, a big-budget item, online.
As a lagniappe, here's a quick search ranking of individual pieces:
1. Futons
2. Beds
3. Sofas
4. Chairs
5. Tables
Given that list, perhaps the conclusion should be: when it comes to online furniture, people would rather lie down than sit up.
