One to Watch: Pinewood Derby Proms, science fair projects... we've seen lots of good old-fashioned search terms lately. Here's one more to add to the feel-good parade: pinewood derby. This Cub Scout tradition has been an extra-hot search item all month.
For those who were never Scouts, pinewood derby racers are little 7-inch cars carved out of a single pine block. Participants get the block plus four plastic wheels and four axles; the design is up to them. The finished cars are raced on a 20-foot downhill track.
The chief danger of pinewood derby racing seems to be keeping competitive ol' dad from taking over and trying to build a super-dragster. Indeed, many of the pages you see online sell books and videos detailing the TOP SECRET keys to building a derby winner. These include sales pitches like "Build your son's self esteem... by coming in first place!" and "It is no fun for any kid to be embarrassed by a really bad car." Well, let's not go overboard.
In any case, our search logs show that pinewood derby season is well underway. The first derby was held in California in 1953, and the topic looks alive and well as the 50th anniversary approaches. Which is a good thing: remember, these kids are the rocket scientists of tomorrow.
