The Lycos 50 Daily Report
 The things you're searching for.January 19, 2001

We're Jazzed Up

Ken Burns always gets people talking, and his new PBS series on jazz is no exception.

Searches for jazz have gone up over the last two weeks, and are now about 50 percent higher than their weekly average for the year. We're also getting a number of searches for PBS Jazz and Ken Burns Jazz.

Ken Burns aside, however, jazz is not tremendously popular online. The most-searched jazz figure of 2000, Louis Armstrong, received less than four percent as many searches as the most-searched male musician of the year, Eminem.

A look at the top jazz musicians on Lycos shows the problem. For the most part, Internet searchers are more concerned with what is hot today. (That's part of what makes the presence of The Beatles on the Lycos 50 so extraordinary.) After all, nobody is searching for rap history. A look at the Top 20 jazz musicians on Lycos shows only seven artists still living, and only two (Diana Krall and Wynton Marsalis) under the age of 40.

For the most part, jazz is still associated with a number of deceased legends, not current stars. Newer performers such as Joshua Redman and Charlie Hunter receive nearly zero searches.

Here are the Top 20 jazz musicians requested by Lycos users for the year 2000:

1)  Louis Armstrong
2)  Duke Ellington
3)  Miles Davis
4)  Diana Krall
5)  Ella Fitzgerald
6)  Nat King Cole
7)  John Coltrane
8)  Kenny G
9)  Tito Puente
10) Pat Metheny

11) Glenn Miller
12) Lena Horne
13) Charlie Parker
14) Benny Goodman
15) Dizzy Gillespie
16) Buddy Rich
17) Tony Bennett
18) Count Basie
19) Herbie Hancock
20) Wynton Marsalis

Finally, I wanted to take an opportunity to answer a question posed in an email. Craig Sanders of twinstuff.com saw yesterday's article on Bush's cabinet and wondered whether Lycos has noticed a rise in searches for Bush's twin daughters Jenna and Barbara.

The answer: yes, we have. Searches for both twins have gone up since the election, although Barbara Bush was getting searches already since she shares her name with her grandmother. Lycos users seem to feel that blonde Jenna is the more attractive twin - last week she got triple the searches of her sister. Check out this picture: that's Jenna on the left.

If you have a question about what people are searching for, feel free to email me at ASchatz@lycos-inc.com.
