What the Kids Have in Mind

Christmas is over. So which fun topic do teenagers think about next?

    A. Spring break
    B. The Grammys
    C. Groundhog Day
    D. Prom dresses

If you chose D, pour yourself a glass of alcohol-free champagne. Searches for prom dresses more than tripled last week over the previous week. Prom dresses got twice as many searches as spring break or the Grammys. (And 30 times as many searches as Groundhog Day.)

Hey, isn't the big dance still four months away?

Well, it's never too soon to start dreaming; Christmas queries began rising in August, after all. And in this post-ironic era it's refreshing to see that the kids are still excited about science fair projects and the prom. Or if not excited, at least curious.

Here are last week's prom-related queries, broken down by percentage:

    2%  Prom hairstyles
    4%  Prom themes
    5%  Prom gowns
    7%  Prom dress
    15% The prom
    67% Prom dresses

In other words, 79% of prom-related brain cells were devoted to dresses and gowns. So who says the Web is dominated by teenaged boys?

Time for a fresh mystery term: MASTIFF.

This user query has been rising fast the last few days -- why? (We know it's a dog, silly. But so what?)
