Movers & Shakers: The Trump, Michael Jackson, and Presidential Hopefuls
January 8, 2008

It's that time of year again - as the new year begins, college and college-bound students all over the country must file their applications for financial aid. The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) gained 425% in search activity this week. Taxes were also a big gainer, seeing a 240% increase from last week.

Although new scripted television is hard to come by these days due to the writers strike, the airwaves are peppered with new reality shows. Interest in Donald Trump rose 200% this week with the premiere of what feels like the 65th season of "The Apprentice" debuting last Thursday. This "Apprentice" is actually the "celebrity" edition, and features several legitimate celebrities (Gene Simmons, Nadia Comaneci) and several people that made us scratch our heads, wondering just what constitutes a "celebrity" (Omarosa, Piers Morgan). Because Thursdays are now regrettably dry of new episodes of "The Office" and "30 Rock," we'll probably end up watching every minute.

New Years specific searches like "Auld Lang Syne" and the "Tournament of Roses" increased this week. (And no, we don't know what the lyrics to "Auld Lang Syne" mean, either.)

Finally, Michael Jackson gained 71% this week; this year marks the 25th anniversary of "Thriller." Michael Jackson is planning to re-release a version of the classic album this February, and is even negotiating performance dates in the U.K. Maybe Britney Spears can open for him...?
